I've been a "Star Trek" fan for over 30 years. I grew up with Kirk and Spock. As a kid, I always wanted the "Star Trek" phaser
and communicator. Well, I have a blade flip phone as a communicator and this great recreation of the original phaser. This was an unlicensed kit sold a while back. I picked it up online and worked on accurizing it. Many
parts have been replaced with machined aluminum pieces and much functionality has been added. The hand grip has been filled with weights for proper heft. The main nozzle is a multi-piece machined part with a clear acrylic tip.

The thumbwheel, trigger, side rails, top cover, side dial and rear grill are all custom aluminum pieces. Some were purchased, some were fashioned by me with primitive hand tools and trial and error. The smaller hand phaser unit is removeable
(like the original) and features a turning thumbwheel, extending clear emitter and a moving sight piece. The main phaser body has moving/clicking dials and a clicking trigger. The rear dial is actually a potentiometer that is still made today.
Even after 40 years, the original phaser is a thing of beauty. |
