This is a replica of the map seen in the first "Lord of the Rings" film, "The Fellowship of the Ring." It's based on Tolkien's original map seen in the book "The Hobbit." With this map, Bilbo Baggins and a company of dwarves went on a quest to the Lonely Mountain to retrieve a fortune in gold from the dragon Smaug. The map was included briefly in the film as a nod to the adventures that had come before. Daniel Reeve created many of the original maps seen in the films. An interesting tidbit is that his original version of this map matched Tolkien's more closely. When director Peter Jackson saw it he was impressed, but he asked for a new version for closeups that added a more stylized dragon and Lonely Mountain. Daniel complied and then had to recreate it in two sizes. Each prop existed in Hobbit size AND human size.

Here are a couple shots of the map from the film for comparison.

I based this map off film references and other printed images. Originally I created this map clean for weathering post-printing. But, my first weathering attempt confirmed that replicating the precise weathering from the original would be very difficult. I then decided to create much of the weathering in the file and add minimal weathering post-printing. In this example, the folds and torn edges are created after printing, but all the weathering is in the digital file and is part of the printing process.
